Viral Hemorrhagic Fever Alert: Staying Informed and Prepared in Liberia

With the recent suspected case and tragic death from Viral Hemorrhagic Fever (VHF) in neighboring Sierra Leone, Liberia’s health authorities have activated proactive measures to protect our borders and communities. While the situation calls for vigilance, the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) assures us:

To Stay Calm. Do Not Panic.

NPHIL has enhanced Port Health and Epidemiological Surveillance at key border crossings in the Northwest region to monitor and prevent the potential spread of VHF into Liberia.

Collaboration Across Borders: Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, Director-General of NPHIL, has engaged with his Sierra Leonean counterpart, Dr. Foday Sahr, Executive Director of Sierra Leone’s National Public Health Agency, to establish a collaborative approach to containment and prevention.

Public Health Advisory: The public is encouraged to adhere to infection control measures to safeguard personal and community health.

How You Can Stay Safe

To prevent the spread of VHF, NPHIL advises the public to:

1. Wash Hands Regularly: Maintain proper hygiene using soap and water or hand sanitizers.

2. Avoid Physical Contact: Refrain from unnecessary touching, especially in crowded areas or with individuals showing symptoms.

3. Report Suspected Cases: Immediately alert your nearest health facility if you observe any signs of illness such as fever, bleeding, or unexplained weakness.

Hope 4 Liberia’s Commitment

At Hope 4 Liberia, we stand with NPHIL in raising awareness and protecting vulnerable populations:

Educating Our Children: We are actively teaching our children about infection prevention and the importance of hygiene.

Monitoring for Symptoms: Our clinic team is prepared to provide immediate care and report any potential cases.

Community Support: We will continue to advocate for stronger healthcare systems and community preparedness to face public health challenges.

Prayer and Action

While we remain calm, let us also remain prayerful. Pray for our neighbors in Sierra Leone and for God’s protection over Liberia. Let’s also work together to ensure we are informed and ready to respond.

By staying vigilant and partnering in these efforts, we can face this challenge with faith and resolve.
