Farming in the Sun: The Challenges of Agriculture During Liberia’s Dry Season

Liberia is blessed with abundant sunshine year-round, making it an ideal location for farming and agriculture. However, during the dry season—typically between November and April—this blessing can also become a significant challenge. The absence of rain, coupled with intense sunlight, puts pressure on farmers and agricultural systems, particularly in rural communities like ours at Hope 4 Liberia.

The Sunshine Stats

Liberia experiences an average of 7 to 8 hours of daily sunshine during the dry season. This high level of sunlight drives plant photosynthesis, essential for crop growth, but when rainfall decreases to nearly zero in some areas, the consequences can be severe.

Without consistent rainfall, the dry season intensifies:

Soil dries out quickly, losing its moisture and making it difficult for crops to absorb water and nutrients.

Evaporation rates increase, meaning any water that is applied manually or stored naturally evaporates rapidly.

Plant stress builds, as the intense heat puts crops at risk of wilting or failing to produce at their potential.

Impact on Agriculture

1. Water Dependency: To sustain crops during the dry season, farmers must rely heavily on irrigation. In many rural areas, access to water sources for irrigation is limited. At Hope 4 Liberia, we must fetch water or create systems to ensure the crops are adequately hydrated—requiring significant time, energy, and resources.

2. Reduced Yields: Without sufficient water, crops grow more slowly, produce smaller yields, or fail altogether. This directly affects food security, especially in regions where agriculture sustains orphanages, families, and communities.

3. Increased Costs: Dry season farming demands more inputs—extra labor for watering, investments in irrigation equipment, and other tools to manage the effects of heat. For us, every effort is a step toward ensuring our children continue to have access to fresh, home-grown produce.

Why the Farm Matters

At Hope 4 Liberia, our farm is a critical part of our mission. We grow crops such as peppers, cassava, potatoes, and greens, ensuring the children in our care have access to nutritious, locally sourced meals. Our farm teaches sustainability, stewardship, and responsibility while helping to offset food costs for the orphanage.

The Way Forward: Support and Sustainability

The dry season is not an easy time, but we are determined to keep our farm thriving. This effort is only possible with:

Prayer: We ask for prayers for strength for our farm workers, and wisdom to manage the challenges of the season.

Partnership: Contributions from supporters help us fund water systems, purchase seeds and tools, and pay for additional labor to sustain the farm.

Innovation: As we grow, we hope to implement improved irrigation systems, water storage tanks, and sustainable practices that make the farm more resilient to dry season pressures.

The Ripple Effects of Agriculture

When the farm thrives, the entire orphanage benefits. The children receive fresh, healthy meals, reducing reliance on costly external supplies. They also learn the importance of hard work, teamwork, and sustainability—values that will stay with them for a lifetime.

As we push through this dry season, we remain committed to keeping our farm alive and productive. We thank our supporters and community for standing with us in this journey. Together, we can overcome the challenges of the sun and turn them into opportunities for growth and resilience.
